Rich Text Editor

Rich Text Editor

The CMS includes a Rich Text Editor for creating formatted content throughout Shapeshift.

It is used wherever rich-text content is available, including Lessons, Courses, Quizzes, Surveys, question content and other configurable areas of the platform.

Formatting content

The Rich Text Editor supports common formatting options including:

  • Headings
  • Bold, italic, underline and strikethrough
  • Bullet and numbered lists
  • Task lists
  • Indented lists
  • Text alignment
  • Blockquotes
  • Inline code and code blocks
  • Subscript and superscript
  • Horizontal dividers
  • Links
  • Tables
  • Collapsible sections

The exact visual appearance of this content is controlled by the design and theme of your LMS.

Images

Images can be added directly into rich-text content.

You can:

  • Select an existing image from the Media Library
  • Upload an image
  • Drag an image into the editor
  • Paste an image into the editor

Images uploaded through the editor are stored through the CMS Media Library so they can be managed alongside other platform media.

Tables

Tables can be created directly in the editor.

Authors can add or remove rows and columns, merge or split cells, and configure table header rows and columns.

Tables should still be kept reasonably simple to ensure they display clearly across desktop and mobile devices.

Embedded content

The editor can also support selected embedded content within the page.

Supported embed providers currently include:

  • H5P
  • Loom
  • Google Drive
  • Mux

Embeds are inserted through the editor's Embed tool rather than by pasting arbitrary iframe or HTML code.

The available providers may vary as Shapeshift evolves.

Video in Lessons

Embedded media can be useful for supporting content within a Lesson, but the dedicated Video field should normally be used for the Lesson's primary video.

The structured Video field allows Shapeshift to provide additional learning functionality such as:

  • Video duration within the curriculum
  • Video-specific module presentation
  • Timestamped learner Notes
  • Video-based completion rules where configured
  • Client-specific video player behavior

For more complex interactive content, Dynamic Components may also provide a better structured experience than placing everything directly inside the Rich Text Editor.

Pasting content

Content can be pasted from common document editors such as Word or Google Docs.

Standard text formatting will generally transfer, although complex document formatting may require some cleanup after pasting.

For the most consistent results, use the Rich Text Editor's own formatting controls after pasting.

Safe and consistent content

The editor stores content in a structured format rather than allowing unrestricted HTML.

This helps Shapeshift keep content presentation consistent and reduces the risk associated with arbitrary embedded code.

Links, images and supported embeds are rendered through Shapeshift's frontend components so they follow the styling and behavior of the LMS.

Where the editor is used

Rich-text fields appear throughout Shapeshift.

Common examples include:

  • Course descriptions and content
  • Lesson content
  • Quiz instructions
  • Quiz question content and hints
  • Survey content
  • Dynamic Components
  • Platform banners and other configured content

The exact rich-text fields available depend on the features enabled for your platform.
