Learner Activity and Engagement

Learner Activity and Engagement

Shapeshift records different types of learner activity to help administrators and Organization Owners understand how learners are engaging with the platform and their learning.

This includes Time spent learning, attendance and login activity, and, where available, Course Library search activity.

Time spent learning

Time spent learning records the time a learner is actively engaged within learning modules.

Time is recorded in seconds against the learner's module and Course enrollments and can be used within management and reporting views.

Time spent learning can be recorded across learning modules including:

  • Lessons
  • Quizzes
  • Surveys
  • SCORM
  • Webinars

Time is recorded while the learner has the learning module actively open. Time spent with the learning tab hidden or inactive is not counted.

For example, a learner watching a video within an active Lesson will continue to accumulate learning time without needing to click or interact with the page.

Viewing Time spent learning

Organization Owners can see Time spent learning for the learners they manage.

Learning time is also available within reporting and analytics, allowing it to be analyzed alongside information such as Course progress, completion and assessment performance.

Where required, Time spent learning can also be used as part of client-specific learning or compliance requirements.

Attendance and login activity

Shapeshift separately records learner attendance and access to the platform.

This is different from Time spent learning. Attendance records when a learner accesses the platform, whereas Time spent learning measures their activity within learning modules.

Attendance information can be used to provide information such as:

  • Last active or last login
  • Login activity
  • Total logins
  • Organization reporting
  • Analytics and engagement reporting

The exact information available depends on the reporting and management features configured for the platform.

Course Library search activity

Where the Course Library is enabled, Shapeshift can record the search terms learners use when searching for Courses.

This information is available through analytics and can help administrators understand what learners are looking for within the Course Library, including subjects or content that may be in demand.

Course Library search tracking is only relevant to platforms where learners have access to the Course Library and its search functionality.

Using activity data

These different measures provide complementary information about learner engagement.

For example, an administrator may use attendance to understand whether a learner is returning to the platform, Time spent learning to understand how much time they are spending with learning content, and Course progress or assessment results to understand what they have completed and how they are performing.

Where Course Library search is available, search activity can provide additional insight into the content learners are actively looking for.
