Quiz Questions and Question Banks

Quiz question types

Shapeshift supports a range of automatically and manually graded question types.

Questions are created separately in the CMS and can then be added directly to Quizzes or organized into reusable Question Banks.

Automatically graded questions

Boolean

Boolean questions ask the learner to choose between two possible values, such as True or False.

One answer is configured as correct.

Single Choice

Single Choice questions present several options with one correct answer.

The learner selects one option and the response is automatically graded.

Multiple Choice

Multiple Choice questions can have more than one correct answer.

When creating the question, you define the correct answers. The learner is required to select the same number of options before they can submit their response.

The response is marked correct only if all selected options are correct. Partial scoring is not used.

Fill in the Blank

Fill in the Blank questions remove one or more words from a piece of text and ask the learner to enter the missing words.

Responses are automatically compared with the configured answers. Matching is case-insensitive and can support a degree of spelling tolerance depending on how the question is configured.

The full question is marked correct when all required blanks are answered correctly.

Drag to Order

Drag to Order questions ask the learner to arrange a set of options into the correct sequence.

The answer is correct only when the complete sequence matches the configured answer.

Matching Order

Matching Order questions ask the learner to correctly match or align a series of options.

The answer is correct only when the complete configured order is matched.

Manually graded questions

Some question types cannot be assessed automatically and require an administrator to review the learner's response.

Text

Text questions allow learners to provide a written response.

The response remains pending until it has been reviewed and graded by an administrator.

File Upload

File Upload questions allow learners to submit one or more files as their response.

These submissions also require manual review and grading.

Question Banks

Question Banks allow you to create reusable pools of questions.

A Question Bank can contain different Quiz question types and can be reused across multiple Quizzes.

When adding a Question Bank to a Quiz, you choose how many questions should be selected from the Bank.

For example, a Question Bank containing 50 questions could be configured to present 10 questions in a Quiz.

The questions selected from the Bank are randomized, so different learners or different attempts may receive different combinations of questions.

Combining Banks and individual questions

A Quiz can combine Question Banks with specific individual questions.

For example, you could configure a Quiz to contain:

  1. 10 random questions from one Question Bank
  2. A specific question that every learner must answer
  3. 5 random questions from another Question Bank

Shapeshift also prevents the same underlying question from being selected more than once within a Quiz attempt where questions appear across multiple Banks or elsewhere in the Quiz.

Reusing Question Banks

Because Question Banks are managed separately from individual Quizzes, the same Bank can be used across multiple assessments.

This makes it easier to maintain a central pool of questions and use different selections from that pool for different Quizzes.
