Enrollments
What is an enrollment?
An enrollment connects a learner to a Course and tracks their progress through it.
Learners can be enrolled directly onto an individual Course or through a Learning Path containing multiple Courses.
Your platform may support several ways of creating enrollments, depending on its configuration.
Direct Course enrollment
A learner can be enrolled directly onto an individual Course.
Their enrollment records their progress, completion status and other Course-related information.
A learner only has one active enrollment and progress record for a Course, even if that Course becomes available to them through more than one route.
Learning Path enrollment
When a learner is enrolled onto a Learning Path, they are enrolled onto the Courses contained within it.
These Course enrollments are linked to the Learning Path so Shapeshift can track the learner's progress through the overall journey.
If a new Course is later added to the Learning Path, existing learners on that Learning Path are automatically enrolled onto the new Course.
Existing Course enrollments
If a learner is already enrolled directly onto a Course and is later enrolled onto a Learning Path containing the same Course, Shapeshift does not create a duplicate Course enrollment.
Their existing progress is preserved.
Because the original enrollment was not created through the Learning Path, however, that Course is not retrospectively linked to the learner's Learning Path enrollment.
Unenrolling from a Learning Path
Removing a learner from a Learning Path removes the Course enrollments that were created through that Learning Path.
Any Course enrollment that exists independently of the Learning Path is preserved.
This prevents removing a Learning Path from unintentionally removing access that the learner received through another enrollment route.
Course curriculum changes
Course enrollments also track the individual Lessons, Quizzes, SCORM modules and other learning activities that a learner is expected to complete.
Adding new content to a Course does not automatically change existing learner enrollments by default. This helps protect historical completion records where learners may already have completed an earlier version of the Course.
Platforms can be configured to enroll existing learners onto newly added Course modules where this is appropriate.
Organizations and enrollment
Organizations can be configured to control how learning is assigned to their members.
Depending on your platform setup, Organization Owners may be able to enroll learners directly, assign Learning Paths, or have particular learning assigned automatically when a learner joins an Organization.
The exact enrollment options available to administrators and Organization Owners depend on your platform configuration.
