Surveys
Introduction
A survey is a module used to collect feedback and insights from learners. Unlike quizzes, surveys are not scored. They help measure engagement, gather sentiment, and identify areas for improvement.
Surveys use a curriculum builder to combine individual questions into a structured set. Questions can be created once and reused across multiple surveys, so any updates to a question are automatically reflected wherever it’s used.
Surveys can be added to a course as a standalone module.
Survey settings
Surveys have a small set of configurable options:
-
Randomize questions: When enabled, the order of questions is randomized each time the survey is opened.
Drip settings: Control when a survey becomes available:
- Drip by days unlocks the survey a set number of days after course enrollment.
- Drip by date unlocks the survey on a specific date.
Unlike quizzes, a learner can only provide one response per survey. If they submit the survey again, the previous answers are replaced. This means the response is stored directly on the Survey enrollment record - there is no separate results or response record.
Creating a survey
- In the CMS, go to Content Manager > Survey.
- Click + Create new entry
- Add the key survey information required for your instance (e.g. title, optional subtitle, thumbnail).
- (Optional) Add an introductory message or instructions, which will display before the survey begins.
- Build your survey:
- Click + Questions to add questions.
- Choose an existing question or create a new one.
- Reorder questions using drag and drop.
- Remove a question from the survey if needed (this won’t delete it from the CMS).
- Configure survey settings (randomize questions and any drip settings).
- Click Save to save the survey as a draft.
- Publish when ready.
Note: A survey must be added to a course curriculum to be visible in the LMS.
Progression behavior
Surveys behave like other module types. By default, they can count toward course progression, but most clients set them as non-progression modules, so learners can skip them without affecting completion.
This can be toggled per module in the curriculum builder.
Survey question types
Surveys support the following question types:
1. Single Choice Question
Learners select one option from a predefined list.
- Enter the question text.
- Add answer options to the options field.
- Optional: Add a hint.
2. Multiple Choice Question
Learners can select multiple options from a predefined list.
- Enter the question text.
- Add answer options to the options field.
- Optional: Add a hint.
3. Rating Question
Learners rate something on a numeric scale.
- Enter the question text.
- Set Scale max to define the highest rating (e.g. 10).
- Add Min label and Max label to give context to the low and high ends of the scale.
- Optional: Add a hint.
4. Boolean Choice Question
Learners provide a simple true/false response.
- Enter the question text.
- Optional: Add a hint.
5. Text Question
Learners provide an open-ended text response.
- Enter the question text.
- Set a character limit if needed.
- Optional: Add a hint.
Key things to keep in mind
- Surveys must be linked to a course to be visible to learners.
- Only one response per learner is stored, and new submissions replace the previous one.
- All responses are stored on the Survey enrollment record.
- Questions can be reused across multiple surveys.
- Randomization can be configured to keep surveys dynamic.
- Drip settings control availability relative to course enrollment.
- Surveys can be included in course progression or set as non-progression modules.
